Starting from our office in the Small Boat Harbor of Seward we bus 20 minutes out to Exit Glacier along scenic Resurrection River Valley. Originating from the mountains bordering the Harding Icefield, Resurrection River braids its way through a valley edged by snow capped mountains before dumping in Resurrection Bay at the north end of Seward. Once in the park our guides will begin our discussion on glaciology before we get to the parking lot by pointing out where, when and why the glacier started to recede. From the visitors center we hike about half a mile to a beautiful overlook of Exit Glacier's terminus, identifying the flora and fauna along the way. We then descend to the front of the glacier where we are literally facing a wall of ice that is the terminus of this massive moving blue rock. All along the way we see and discuss the glaciers story that carved out the valley surrounding us, as well as keeping an eye out for local friends of moose and black bear. Over the last few years three independent black bears have called Exit Glacier home and we always practice safety and non-disturbance with all animals of the park. That being said the opportunity for a bear photo is something we always keep an eye out for.
The tour is leisurely paced and covers a total distance of about 1.6 miles. A memorable and informative glacial experience that provides some of the best views in Alaska our 2 Hour Glacier Overlook Hike is the perfect filler to any stay in Seward.
