Our 2 day Crevasse Rescue Course is designed for adventurous folks looking to gain the skills and knowledge to be able to explore the snow-covered and glaciated mountains on their own

Crevasse Rescue Course - 2 Day

Whether you live in Alaska or are visiting our area, the skills learned during this course can create the foundation for all your future mountaineering adventures.  Basic climbing experience is preferred for this course, with a working knowledge of belaying, rappelling and walking in crampons being ideal.  For those without previous snow or climbing experience, we recommend our one-day Introduction to Mountaineering Course.

The first day will focus on the basics of gear selection, anchors, rope-work and hauling systems.  Participants will meet at our office and after reviewing gear the group will head to the Exit Glacier.  On the glacier the group will utilize the varied glacier terrain to learn and practice the knots, anchors, ascending, and mechanical advantage hauling systems.  In addition, the group will have time to practice their vertical ice climbing technique while on the Exit Glacier.

Day two will focus on snow related skills such as self arrest, snow anchors and roped team travel.  To access the snow covered terrain needed to learn and practice these skills, the group will take a short helicopter ride to access a rugged alpine glacier situated right above Seward.  In addition to learning new snow based skills, day two will involve plenty of time to practice the group’s newly learned skills.  The end of the second day will see the group return to the Exit Glacier Guides office for a discussion on risk management, terrain assessment, mountaineering equipment and how to continue one’s climbing education.  Furthermore, our guides are always available after the course if any of the students have additional questions as they plan and execute their future adventures.

Why choose Exit Glacier Guides?

For adventurous individuals looking to further their skills and independence in the mountains, this course will teach the skills required for mountaineering on snow covered and glaciated mountains.  Ample time is given to practice those skills in the rugged yet easily accessible mountains around Seward, AK.  Furthermore, the schedule of spending one day on the Exit Glacier and then taking a helicopter to an alpine glacier on the second day will immerse the participants into a spectacular mountain setting.  This Crevasse Rescue Course has a small client to guide ratio of 3:1, and all participants will have one on one instruction.  Lastly, our guides are the most experienced in Seward, with numerous first ascents and climbs on glaciated peaks throughout the Chugach Mountains, Alaska Range, the Cascades, New Zealand, and South America.
